marketing: tubechat - for londoners - chatting, blogging and earning!

This guy who made an old chat site for londoners has recently been upgrading his site http://www.tubechat.co.uk - he's now made it so that anyone (from London) can join up for FREE, create a profile, stick in their google adsense ID, and start earning. They will also be able to blog as fo next week, to help drive traffic to their pages.

They can start an online photo album and all sorts. Just like any other chat site, but with the clever addition of blogging and getting paid for it. Not bad eh.

music: Animals - Pink Floyd
An oldie, but a goodie. Definitely one of my favourite albums of all time. Something bands today should listen to for some inspiration. Within 3 minutes, you're sucked into this ambient fantasy world of crisp clean guitar rifs, top notch lyrics and a deep meaningfuly story behind it all.

For die-hard Floyd fans, this is the icing on the cake. Often forgotten in favour of the more popular albums such as Dark side of the Moon and The Wall, this is more a single piece of music with separate chunks in it than a collection of separate songs. I have to say, the kind of uniqueness found in this album, I have never really heard anywhere else.

Get yourself a copy, dim down the lights, get a few bevvys, light a fat candle or two and chill to it. Ahh 41 minutes of pure heaven.

music: Sparkle and Fade - Everclear
I think I may need to buy myself a new copy of this fabulous piece of music. If this was pie, it would be apple pie and ice cream…but it isn't. It is so good, I actually tried to eat the CD once, which was a huge shame because now the case has a fcuking crack across it and doesn't close properly.

But none of that matters. By the time you've finished listening to this, you'll understand that the case probably should be a bit battered. Art Alexakis takes us on a rollercoaster ride of some of the darker parts of his life. Hits like Herion Girl and and Heartspark Dollarsign make you wish someone had told you about this amazing band earlier. But after that, you wish you could go back and listen to it again and again for the first time. But in a way you can, there's so much going on, the until you've heard it about a hundred and fifty times, there are always new amazing riffs or drum patterns you never picked up before. It's music for people with goldern ears, who can appreciate real rocky grunge.

The way it was always meant to be. Not to be missed.

marketing: Boost your adsense earnings by more than 200%!
Hi Peepz,

I have recently discovered an interesting little trick which seems to 'force' Google to display more relevant ads on your pages. This obviously boosts CTR nicely.

First, there are a few things which need explaining. Google seems to have some kind of 'formula' for -default site-wide ads…ie a bunch of keywords which it reverts to, to display ads based upon - when it hasn't had a chance to re-index a site and pick up on recent changes. Changes which would otherwise keep the ads relevant.

To get around this, I've found that simply by adding a fake 'new-page-indicator' to the URL of said page, it immediately goes off and picks up some RELEVANT ads! This can be achieved simply by adding something like ?randid=1234 to the end of your URL for that page.

For example: Mrs X has a blog based on 'bathroom products'. She ads a new section for 'luxury bath oils'. Google doesn't normally pick up on this change for a while, and will display default 'bathroom products' based ads until it has had a chance to pick up on the change. Simply adding ?randID=1234 (...the number should be a fairly random number), google will pick up on the changes and start shouwing more relevant ads immediately.

If this doesn't work, try adding &section=section%20title to the url also. This also seems to help.

Let me know your findings!

general: I'm Back - with the bubble!

Hi All,

Desspest appologies for the week long scilence, but now it's over and I'm back and raring to go again. Got a touch of the flu(nope not the bird flu ha ha...), and have been tucked up in bed watching endless episodes of 24 whilst contemplating the year ahead.

It got me thinking, bloging really took off in 2005, and every year there's a new fad…something that really makes it and get's really popular…even among non-geeks ;P

So what could be the biggies of 2006? HDTV & HDDVD, PDRs, AJAX & Web 2.0 websites…there's a whole host of things.

With the return of Boo.com later this year, it seems the dot com bubble is well and truly back.

The last few years, prople have been sceptical about the web, but now it's established itself as a solid and trustable business source. It's been proven that people CAN make money on the web…just with a little more effort than everyone originally believed. Those who stuck at it and didn't give up or spend ludacrous amounts on advertising are going strong and will be around for some time to come.

Send in your thoughts on the year ahead…could be interesting…

marketing: Blog Targeting - Targeted Writing Styles
An often overlooked issue, especially with new bloggers, is targeting. Specifically 'writing styles'. The style and professionalism in which you decide to write your blog, shouldn't just depend on how you feel that day, or at that particular moment. Always sit down before posting a new blog, and get into the frame-of-mind of the reader. Ask yourself, "who are my readers?", and "what does this blog cover?".

If you are writing on professional subjects to professionals, it makes a great deal of sense to make that little extra effort to take care of grammar and punctuation. If you are teen, writing a music review blog", it's probably ok to keep things a little more informal.

Regardless of who you are writing for though, always try and keep your grammar and punctuation correct and as accurate as possible. That way, readers will at least take you seriously and are therefore more likely to come back.

All the best,

marketing: Blog Stickiness - Required Ingredient
For any kind of site to work on the web, whether it is a blog or normal website, it needs to be "sticky"!

A sticky site, is one that users stay on for a long time, and keep coming back to. In turn, this means more visitors and more loyal returning visitors, and hence more income from various revenue streams used on your blog.

A Sticky site needs to be well planned out from the very beginning and needs to…

1. Be designed with intuative navigation in mind

2. Have plenty of original, useful content.

3. Be updated regularly.

If it is difficult to navigate, people will leave as soon as the frustration sets in, which is usually very quickly on the web.

If it doesn't have original compelling content, people will carry on searching elsewhere.

If it's not updated regularly, people will stop coming back after their first one or two visits.

travel: Jewels of Mauritius
During my travels in this paradise in the indian ocean, I came across many beautiful wonders. Anyone who visits the country, should not go home without seeing all of these!

Ile Aux Cerfs - A small island just off the coast of Mauritius, with crystal clear lagoons and palm trees everywhere. Just like a scene from "The Beach" or "Cast Away". Go early, during the week, and you'll have a whole spot to yourself. It's an experience not to be missed.

Verangue Sur Morne - Take a day to venture up to Chamarel(seven colours of earth). On the way, you'll see a quaint restaurant literally hanging off the mountain. Go on a rainy day, when it's above the mist of the valley's below. The delectable cuisine and view is out of this world. There's nothing else like it for lunch on a rainy day.

More gems coming soon.

marketing: be original - carve a blog niche
A few years back, I was working for a Content Syndication Company in London. The general motto back then was "Content is King". To have tons of content at your fingertips could make you a lot of money...easily.

These days, things are different. Content is no longer King, as there is so much of the same stuff floating around the internet, often being given away completely for free.

The motto these days has to be: "ORIGINAL content is King".

Don't be a sheep and follow every other Tom, Dick or Harry out there who's making a Digital Camera blog or mp3 player's blog, because the web is already saturated with such articles. To get noticed in these markets would take something really f**king amazing!

So, why not do something more original. Take Karli for example, who is starting her "travel" blogs. She is going to be writing on rarer locations, like Mauritius and Jamacia and remote places that haven't already been done to death. This way, when Mr Searcher comes looking for the info, her's has a much greater chance of being seen.

It's a rule worth not ignoring, try it out.

marketing: blog targeting
Welcome all, this is my first femblog's post, so please enjoy.

An important rule, which applies strongly to web design, should also be applied to blogging. One which has strongly been used here at femblogs.

ALWAYS KEEP YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE IN MIND.

This is a very important rule, which can sometimes be easily overlooked. If you are making a site aimed at kids, make sure no dirty stuff can accidentally find it's way onto it. If you're blogging about sports cars, don't drift idly on about Volvos.

It's laregely down to common sense, but can be very easy to lose focus and waddle off about something completely unrelated. I should know, I do that while I'm talking all the time!

A great example of targeting your primary audience is right here at femblogs.

We are writing primarily for females (however, the content is universally readable for males too, so as not to completely alienate other would-be visitors)

Excessive use of pink, forces old fasioned mind-cogs into action and shouts "hey, I'm a feminine site".

If you are going to put ads on your site, always make sure they are relevant. Someone reading a blog on sports cars is never going to click on an ad for "pink nail varnish at discount prices"

All comments welcome.

More of the bleedin' obvious to come soon.
